Techno Therapy: Watch Deborah De Luca in Times Square Weeks After Emergency Surgery
Watch the full set of the Italian techno superstar in Times Square, just ahead of the release of her highly anticipated third studio album, “Hard Pop.”
Just a few weeks ago, techno superstar Deborah De Luca was waging an inner war as surgeons removed a malignant tumor from her abdomen. Now, she's DJing in the heart of Times Square.
The Italian electronic music producer performed a rare pop-up set recorded on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, to celebrate her upcoming third studio album, “Hard Pop,” which will be released on Friday via her own Solamente Records. De Luca played tracks from the new album, featuring several of its vocalists.
It was a significant moment for the resilient DJ, who revealed last month that she underwent emergency surgery after discovering a tumor. Remarkably, she recovered quickly and was back on tour within a week.
“I underwent 'emergency' surgery 6/7 days after the diagnosis because there was no time. Within 1 or 2 months, the tumor would have spread beyond the organ that contained it, causing severe consequences that I don't even want to write about but that you can imagine,” De Luca wrote in a statement on social media, translated from Italian. “I got very lucky.”
De Luca is renowned for her visceral sound, blending grit with grace for a more nuanced approach to techno music. “Hard Pop” feels like a full-blown showcase, as the album “celebrates [her] deep-rooted connections to Neapolitan techno and her appreciation for pop's growing role within the genre,” according to a press release shared with EDM.com.
“I'm so excited to bring my music to the heart of New York City with this once-in-a-lifetime event,” she said before the show. “Times Square is a truly iconic destination, and I am honored to have the opportunity to share the music from my new album with my US fans.”
